Chris Silverwood has been sacked as England Head Coach by the ECB after just over two years at the helm.
Silverwood, who was appointed to the role in October of 2019, had faced calls for his resignation following a humiliating 4-0 Ashes defeat down under, with questions raised over his team selection and overall tactics.
The 46 year-old was the second member of England’s staff forced out of their post in the last week, with Ashley Giles also removed from his position as Managing Director as part of the Ashes fallout.
The former head coach oversaw test series victories abroad in South Africa and Sri Lanka as well as two home series victories against the West Indies and Pakistan in the summer of 2020.
However, having only managed to win four out of 17 test matches in 2021/22, coupled with his side’s failure to reach the T20 World Cup Final, his position became under threat.
Andrew Strauss, who was chosen to be interim replacement for Giles as managing director of the ECB, is set to appoint a caretaker coach for the three match test series coming up against the West Indies in March.
In a statement released by the ECB, Silverwood said: “It’s been an absolute honour to be England Head Coach, and I’m extremely proud to have worked alongside our players and staff. I want to thank them all for the hard work and commitment they have given during my time in the role and I wish them all the very best moving forward.”
Tom Harrison, Chief Executive of the ECB, said: “During his time in the role Chris has given absolutely everything to make a success of it. He is a man of great integrity, who players and staff alike have enjoyed working with.”
