Manchester United have been knocked out of the Fa Cup by Middlesbrough 8-7 on penalties.
Anthony Elanga’s missed spot kick saw Chris Wilder’s side progress to the 5th round as the visitors scored eight out of eight of their penalties in the shootout.
United continued their poor record in shootouts, with the home side being beaten in 8 of their last 9 attempts.
A controversial Matt Crooks equaliser in the 63rd minute cancelled out Jadon Sancho’s first half effort to see the game go to extra-time at Old Trafford.
Middlesbrough’s goal came through the former Manchester United academy graduate who tapped home from Duncan Watmore’s cross, with the ball looking as if it came off the hand of Watmore as he attempted to take the ball under control from Isaiah Jones’ pass.
Manchester United took the lead in the 25th minute as Sancho was found through the middle by Bruno Fernandes, with the Englishman’s shot taking a small deflection on its way past Joe Lumley in the Middlesbrough goal.
The home side had a big opportunity to take the lead five minutes earlier when Paul Pogba was brought down inside the area by Anfernee Dijksteel . Cristiano Ronaldo missed an opportunity to claim his 15th goal of the season from the spot as he screwed his effort wide of the right-hand post.
The second half saw the Red Devils miss more guilt-edged opportunities, with Fernandes’ failure to take advantage of a miss communication at the back between Dael Fry and his goalkeeper, summing up United’s performance.
This result means Ralf Rangnick’s side will most likely end a 5th successive season without a trophy whilst Middlesbrough make their first 5th round appearance since the 16/17 campaign.
